Google March 2024 Core & Spam Updates: Points You Cannot Miss!

It was only in January 2024 that a German research paper took up the topic of how iffy links were flooding Google. Seems like the giant search engine has paid heed to the netizens’ complaints. Yes, we are talking about the Google March 2024 core updates! The company in its press release has addressed the key concerns, and how it intends to target the ‘unfiltered spam’ that has been affecting its ‘search quality’ over time.  This post will give you an insight into the core updates, new spam policies, site reputation/expired domain, and scaled content abuse. We will also answer the queries that content creators have after this update.  What do the Google March 2024 core updates state?  For the unversed, this March 2024 rollout is no routine update. Rather, it is a comprehensive crackdown that touches multiple aspects of the core system. Over the years together, Google has enhanced its features and integrated innovative methodologies to improve ‘usability.’ This update is another step towards the future to broaden its horizons and adapt to the progressing digital landscape.  According to the official blog – “This update involves refining some of our core ranking systems to help us better understand if webpages are unhelpful, have a poor user experience, or feel like if they were created for search engines instead of people…”  Thus, one may understand that – this update from the tech giant is not solely about ‘improving’ search algorithms. Rather, the aim is to address the ‘spamming’ challenge and provide ‘relevant and informative’ content. The deadline given to website owners to prepare for this upgrade is May 5, 2024. After that, this new policy will take effect.     What are the key areas it targets?  In this section, we will clearly address the ‘facets’ that the Google March 2024 core updates target –  New Spam Policy  The company has announced 3 new spam policies to filter out plagiarized and poor-quality content.  MALPRACTICES WHAT GOOGLE STATES  Spam policies against bad practices like – abuse of scaled content, website’s reputation, and utilizing expired domains.  Introducing sophisticated algorithms to immediately detect – spam content and penalize it.  Promoting a healthier digital landscape and preparing the ground for ‘qualified’ content.   The official announcement states –   “We encourage content creators to review all of our spam policies and ensure that they aren’t engaging in such practices. Sites that violate our spam policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all…”    Detailed idea about the malpractices –  In this section, we will update you specifically about the new spam policies in detail –      1. Scaled Content Abuse  The first malpractice that the company has decided to take note of is – reducing the visibility levels of scaled content. This implies that for years together Google has restricted the usage of automated procedures to create plagiarized content on a wider scale. This was to prevent ranking manipulation.  MALPRACTICES  WHAT GOOGLE STATES  Multiple pages are generated by a website only to manipulate the rankings.  Irrespective of its creation (either AI content/human-written/combined efforts) it offers no valuable insight to the readers.  This policy is built on Google’s previous spam policy.  The official announcement states –  “Our long standing spam policy has been that use of automation, including generative AI, is spam if the primary purpose is manipulating ranking in Search results…Our new policy is meant to help people focus more clearly on the idea that producing content at scale is abusive…”         2.  Site Reputation Abuse  The Google March 2024 core updates speak about how credible websites with informative content host third-party promotions to monetize that platform. Google has decided to take stringent action and devalue its credibility.  MALPRACTICES  WHAT GOOGLE STATES  The third-party pages (sponsor/advertising/partner) are published with almost little to no overseeing by the reputed ‘first-party’ hosts.  The aim is to only seek benefit from the initial party’s ‘ranking signals.’  Third-party pages are independent of the host’s party’s purpose and have the sole motive of ‘manipulating’ search engines.  The official announcement states –  “Our new policy doesn’t consider all third-party content to be a violation, only that which is hosted without close oversight and which is intended to manipulate Search rankings. For example, many publications host advertising content that is intended for their regular readers, rather than to primarily manipulate Search rankings…”           3. Expired Domain Abuse  This refers to those times when various website owners go ahead and buy additional but expired website domains. After that, they post plagiarized/inferior and off-target content on those. By using this website cloaking strategy they intend to get traffic.  MALPRACTICES WHAT GOOGLE STATES  Expired domains purchased and repurposed to manipulate website rankings. This website malpractice is followed by the owners when they intend to exploit the ‘reputation’ of the past website and gain profits.  These domains can be found by visitors only through search engines. The official announcement states –  “…For example, someone might purchase a domain previously used by a medical site and repurpose that to host low quality casino-related content…Expired domain abuse isn’t something people accidentally do…It’s fine to use an old domain name for a new, original site that’s designed to serve people first.”    What happened behind the scenes?  Let us look at what Google’s Spam Explainer has to say about this update –  It seems that Google is looking to de-emphasize the role that links play in determining the relevancy of a webpage.  Therefore, the concept of creating poor-quality content simply to manipulate the rankings will be taken to task. In fact, the tech giant has clearly stated that this attempt will be considered ‘link spamming.’  Lastly, in the context of using expired domains, there will be stringent checking about ‘repurposing’ old domains and ‘not using it fruitfully’ to match search queries.  This ‘behind-the-scenes’ news on the latest updates showcases the path that the search engine intends to walk on in the upcoming future. The destination is – serving people first!

What Is Google Dorking? Know How To Be Safe Online

Hacking is a beyond the pale activity that has harmed the usability of search engines in many impolitic ways. But cybersecurity researchers and ethical hacking experts have been providing the ill-willed hackers the taste of their own medicine with smart strategies; take Google Dorking, for example. Security researchers and hackers equally utilize this technique to uncover sensitive information using certain commands on Google, but for different reasons. The technological advancements have been used maliciously since their inception, and Google Dorking is no exception. The history of Dorking dates back to 2002 when Johnny Long began collecting Google search queries that reveal ‘vulnerable systems and/or sensitive information disclosures.’ He labeled these search queries as ‘googleDorks.’ This article discusses the evolution of Dorking, its legalities, potential threats, dork queries, and protective measures that one must be aware of to be safe online. What Is Google Dorking? Also known as Google Hacking, Google Dorking is a technique widely used to collect sensitive and secret information from computer systems, software, and hardware that are vulnerable and prone to security flaws with certain commands on Google. This method comes handy to steal private information including: Social Security Numbers National Identification Number Webcams Passwords Email addresses Usernames Shell scripts User accounts Credit/Debit card credentials and other financial details, etc. that are hard to access normally. This technique is not limited to Google but can also be exercised on other search engines, including Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Yahoo. However, search results might vary for different search engines. How Google Dorking Evolved? A cybersecurity expert, Johnny Long, is famous for devising Google Dorking. He was a part of Computer Sciences Corporation’s vulnerability assessment team- Strike Force and discovered Google search queries that unveiled vulnerable servers. In addition, these queries also unleashed the servers that circulate personal and sensitive information in the public eye. This resulted in creating the Google Hacking Database(GHDB) in 2004. The database contains hundreds of search queries used for hacking/Dorking. Over time, cybercrime has massively increased using these search queries called Google Dorks. Not only the world’s most used search engine, Google, but other search engines, including Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo, are also utilized for this purpose. Is Google Dorking Illegal? Google Dorking is technically legal and massively used by security experts. However, it is potentially used by hackers to gain unauthorized access to personal information. A Brooklyn Law School student and a published legal scholar, Star Kashman, often elaborately highlights this issue. She has studied and shared the ethical and criminal usage of search engine hacking and how it violates the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). In her paper published in the Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts on 2 June 2023, she explains the legalities related to this technique. She mentioned that CFAA doesn’t regard Google Dorking as an illegal activity, stating that any information that is out in the public domain doesn’t require ‘unauthorized access.’ However, the FBI and many other legitimate organizations use ‘dorking’ and ‘hacking’ synonymously. She highlights that the existing definition of hacking as per CFAA and existing laws fails to highlight and address the problem of computer crime as well as limit the use of Google Dorking. What Is Google Dorks Query? Google Dorks Query are special terms or symbols called ‘operators’ which are used with keywords to discover normally undisclosed information. The compromise of the CIA’s worldwide secret communications network leading to failure of 70% of its operations and the cyber attack on 46 financial institutions in the US during 2011-2013 along with Bowman Avenue Dam in Rye Brook, New York, are the two most prominent cases in the history of dorking. Both the cases and many others took place using the dork’s query. Google Dorks Query List With Examples The table below shows the Google Dorks list that security researchers and hackers use to discover site vulnerabilities for contrasting purposes. We already know that hackers use Google Dorking commands to fetch personal and private details with illicit intent. Security researchers use this technique to acquire knowledge of loopholes and report them for improvement, among many other legitimate purposes. For instance, the Google Mobile Vulnerability Reward Program and Apna Vulnerability Disclosure Policy  are two examples where cybersecurity researchers use Dorking commands. The table below lists the most used dorks to get access to online information. These search terms are intertwined with a strategic approach to discover information that is inaccessible through normal search means. S.NO. Top 8 Local SEO Tips That Will Skyrocket Your Site Traffic

Since the past decade, many entrepreneurs have opted to build an online presence for their business. This includes having a search engine-friendly website and social media accounts. However, many business owners tend to neglect local SEO. What they do not know is that it provides them an even playing field against enterprises and corporations. That said, we have listed down eight local SEO tips that you can include in your digital marketing campaign. 1. Incorporate Local Keywords Any reliable local SEO services provider would tell you how important it is to look for locally relevant keywords for your SEO strategy. That’s why if you want to improve your ranking on search engines, you want to do local keyword research. However, what is a local keyword anyway? Simply put, a local keyword has a location-specific detail or phrasing in them. These keywords would then generate search engine results with geographic ties. You can use your local keywords anywhere you usually input your keywords, such as the title and meta description. One way to make it seamless is by incorporating your business’s general location in the title or meta description. 2. Setup Google My Business If you want to improve your chances of popping up in local Google searches, you should optimize your profile on Google My Business. Google My Business serves as a local listing, and it will even show up on Google Maps. It helps people figure out details about your business, especially your location and opening hours. The more optimized your GMB profile is, the higher the chance you will rank for the relevant keywords. It will also help you stand out from any other competitors because you have all of your details that are relevant to them out in the open.  Since Google My Business is connected to Google Maps, it might also include a small map of your location if you correctly input that information. Together, all of these factors will help you stand out in the search results.  3. Highlight Customer Testimonials One of the best ways to get more website traffic is by highlighting customer reviews and testimonials. Showing that prior customers are satisfied with your provided job will encourage others to take you up on your service. It helps build your reputation and trustworthiness even to those who just found you. You might even want to include the customers’ location to highlight how good your services are and the wide range of people you’ve provided your services or products. Besides posting customer testimonials on your website, you might also want to post them on your socials. Of course, you have to ask for the permission of your customers to post them too. 4. Produce Local Content Content is one of the best ways you can improve your search engine rankings. That’s why you should also produce content. With that said, if you want to improve your local SEO, you should create content that is relevant to the locality that you are targeting. Practical knowledge of your target market is critical for this. However, you can use your local keyword research to help you get local content ideas to produce. It would help if you also sprinkled these local keywords in your content to help it rank higher in search engine results. Of course, don’t go too heavy-handed on this, or it will seem like an unnatural fit within your content. The key is to produce local content and ensure that it’s relevant and of high quality. 5. Get Listed On Online Directories As much as possible, try and list your business in online directories to improve your local SEO. Google My Business is one example of a local and online listing that you should be on that we mentioned earlier. However, there are plenty of other online directories that you should optimize. Review sites like Yelp will be helpful, but only if you did your research and know that Yelp is popular in your target market. Otherwise, it’s not worthwhile. At the same time, there are online directories that are there for specific niches. For example, there are detailed online listings for home improvement businesses. Do your research and list your business on the correct online directories relevant to your customers. 6. Ensure Your NAP Accuracy While getting your business listed on online directories, ensure you input updated and current business information. There’s no point in showing up in many of these search results if the data and information about your business there are incorrect.  At the very least, you should make sure that your name and place, or NAP, information is correct. Consistency allows search engine bots to associate your location with your business. Make it a habit to check up on the listings you have online and update them when updating.  7. Get Backlinks From Other Local Businesses If you want to improve your reputation within the community, you might want to connect with local businesses. You can start with the companies that you work with frequently. It will be much easier to pitch something to them to help you get more backlinks leading back to your website. The key is to ask them if they have a website up and running. Then create content or any compelling media that would make them want to backlink to you. Don’t assume that just because you have a positive working relationship with them should have a backlink leading to you.  Much like anything else in life, prove to them that you’re worth linking back to on their site. 8. Create An FAQ Page An essential part of your website would be an FAQ page. This page should be about the most common questions that you get from potential clients. The page is also an excellent way to incorporate more locally relevant questions, and you might even put a few keywords here and there. Conclusion When you want to power up your local SEO campaign, the tips listed above can help you the most.

Is Local SEO Worth The Investment?

Is Local SEO Worth The Investment?

Unless you have an online business, your physical store plays a significant role in your business’s success. Also, the people who are closest to your location are likely to buy from you.  That said, you will need to implement local SEO to ensure that your business appears in relevant search results. What is Local SEO? Local SEO is an optimization process wherein you target local search queries. These queries often include locations (e.g., Indian restaurant LA) or “near me” (e.g., Indian restaurants near me). As far as search intent is concerned, people who use local search queries are ready to buy. That said, a robust local SEO strategy enables you to improve online visibility to people who are willing to buy. Local SEO also allows you to drive more awareness to your business and boost your search rankings. If you are still unsure whether it would be great to invest in local SEO, here are eight reasons you should consider it: 1. Improves online visibility Approximately 72 percent of consumers who are looking for a local business will visit it within five miles.  That’s why, if your business is found on Google Maps or in local search results, then most likely, you will be able to get new leads for your business.  Remember that when someone in a particular location looks for your business, you are placing your business name and reputation in front of their eyes. Hence, you might as well strive to rank on top. Let’s say you are a small business that wants to improve your online visibility. If you do it properly, you will place your small business even on top of large companies’ competitors. Throwing money or size will not get them further than what you can do. That’s how powerful local SEO is for small businesses. 2. People are always searching Most searches on Google usually happens on mobile. According to data by Search Engine Land, 78% of local mobile searches result from an online purchase.  Another study found out that approximately 30% of mobile searches are often location related. And 76% who do a local search on mobile would want to visit a business within a day personally.  This study reinforces that having excellent local search rankings should be one of your core objectives. 3. It is cost-effective Local SEO brings in a lot of potential to your business because of the kind of audience that it attracts. Usually, these are physically near your store and are actively searching for the type of business you provide.  Meaning, these types of people will likely become paying customers.     It might be time-consuming, but optimizing your website for local search results ensures your brand will appear in front of customers who are ready to buy. Meaning, an effective local SEO campaign can lead to vast returns of an investment to your business. It is just a matter of implementing the right strategies with the help of a reliable local SEO agency. So, think about all the work and the cost of launching a newspaper, radio campaign, or direct mail. Then, figure out how you can best use your time and resources. 4. It is easy to set up You might want to hire someone to set up your Google My Business page.  This can be a great idea so that you can ensure that it is set up correctly. However, this process is pretty straightforward, that you can even easily set this up yourself.  5. It improves your reputation When you incorporate local SEO, you will have the chance to create a better reputation online to develop a more centered campaign.  This way, your particular niche target market can quickly receive your message or offers. Over time, as your site gains more traffic and qualified prospects, they will patronize your site and product offerings more.  This is also an excellent opportunity for you to build relationships with prospects. You can do this by offering client support services or one-time promotions.  6. It delivers qualified search traffic With local search, you will be able to weed out searches that are not connected with your business. This is not because search engines are blocking local businesses to users. Instead, they want to offer relevant local searches that are based on intent and proximity.  Therefore, someone who is 75 miles away will not probably see your coffee shop pop up when they do a local search. On the other hand, someone who is just five miles away will.  7. Your competitors are doing it More and more companies today are becoming tech-savvy. They are using their website and social media platforms to connect with local audiences. That said, you must put in the effort to be relevant and separate yourself from your competitors.  By working with a reliable local SEO agency, you can build robust marketing strategies to boost your business’s online reputation. Local SEO can also help you secure your company’s future and adapt to evolving trends in your industry. 8. Grow a following online Through Yelp or Google Maps, people can quickly lookup a type of business, see menus and services, send a message, book an appointment or make a purchase.  People can also ask you questions, write a review, and answer the comments and questions customers left. This level of engagement will eventually build on itself.  Over time, you’ll be able to establish a local online community in your niche, which plays an invaluable role in marketing.  Over To You Other than your location, there are various components that allow you to run a successful local SEO campaign. It also includes a user-friendly website, a healthy link profile, relevant content, and an active social media presence.  There is no denying that local SEO helps you build your business profile and boost your revenue. In addition to that, here are more reasons local SEO are worth the investment: Improved online visibility People are always searching It is cost-effective It is easy to set up

Other than, such marketing practice have a long-lasting and compounding effect. For one, it compels you to consider usability. Another benefit you get to establish your presence and reputation within your industry. This is due to the content your produce and the promotional channels you use.  And when you have an excellent online reputation, more people will trust your brand. This can increase sales. 3 Effective SEO Tactics for Small Businesses With the benefits of SEO for small businesses all laid out, we have listed down three small business SEO services you should implement. That way, you can improve your small business’s online presence. 1. Local SEO As a small business, you would probably benefit more if you focused on local SEO rather than targeting SEO relevant globally. Local SEO is essentially when you optimize your website so that it appears more on search engine results with a specific location. It is a lot less competitive, but it still can get some good search volume if you know which terms to target. Here are some local SEO tactics that you should use: (a) Use Google My Business Account     Creating your Google My Business account is one way to make your business easier to find on search engines. Google My Business is essentially a listing site powered by Google. Creating an account will help you rank higher on Google Maps and show up on local search results more. It’s simple and easy but powerful. (b) Add Location Pages on Your Website If you have business branches, you might want to add location-specific landing pages. That way, you can personalize the content on the landing page more depending on where the user is searching.  SEO is all about bettering user experience, so providing relevant and personal content is always beneficial to a website. (c) Get Listed on Online Directories Besides getting a Google My Business listing up and running, it would be best if you also listed your business in other online directories. You can list it down in general listing sites, like Yelp or something similar. However, there are also industry-specific listings. Another tip is to get listed on local directories. The more relevant the guide is to your industry, the better it is for you. (d) Encourage Online Reviews Another way to promote your business is to encourage online customer reviews. It’s also content that you didn’t have to create yourself. Thus, it’s a good idea to encourage previous customers to leave reviews of your product or services as much as possible. At the same time, it can encourage window shoppers to shop from your business because they’ve seen a positive review of your product or service. 2. Technical SEO Technical SEO is less about what you do on the front end of your site and more about its back end, the ones that people don’t see or notice. This includes website security, schema markups, and trimmed codes. To get you started, here are some technical SEO tips you can do: (a) Improve Pageload Speed One of your website’s most critical technical aspects that you should pay attention to would be your website’s loading speed. It only takes a second for potential customers to click away from your website when they deem that the website isn’t loading fast enough. Plus, crawlers will pay attention to a slow website and recommend the site to people as much if it’s too slow. That’s why you should find ways to speed up your website. (b) Optimize Site Structure As mentioned before, the proper and easy navigation through your site is one part of technical SEO. Again, SEO is not just about getting the attention of your potential customers. It’s also about providing an excellent user experience for your website visitors. (c) Make it Mobile-Responsive Speaking of creating a positive user experience on your website, you also want to make sure that your website is mobile-friendly. In 2020, smartphone users in the world reached 3.5 billion. And more than half of them access the Internet through their devices. Thus, it’s vital that your website can provide a consistent experience, regardless of screen size. 3. On-page SEO On-page SEO is more about the content you publish on your website. We are not just talking about your blog posts. We also mean the text and images you put on your Homepage, About Us, and Contact Us. That’s because your content and how you optimize it are integral in ranking for the right keywords. Here are some on-page SEO to get you started: (a) Conduct Keyword Research Keyword research is a significant part of on-page SEO as it helps you identify which phrases and terms to target in your content. It lets you know which words are most relevant to your target audience and whether they’re worth pursuing or not based on the level of competition. (b) Optimize Your URL Every URL for your webpage should also go through scrutiny. As much as possible, you want to

10 Worst Local SEO Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Search Traffic

Local search engine optimization is undoubtedly vital if you want people within your local area to discover your business. This explains why local SEO is best applied to companies with physical locations. Apart from that, 46% of all the searches done on Google aim to search for information. For instance, internet users would use their phones to search for restaurants near them. Hence, it makes sense to include local SEO in your marketing mix. The problem is that many businesses commit mistakes that can ruin their entire campaign. That said, we have listed down ten common local SEO mistakes to avoid if you want to save your business’s marketing campaign. 1. Lack of keyword research Keywords are vital for local SEO campaigns. Most of these terms are often used by your target audience when searching for what they need, thus leading them to your site. That said, you should look at the following factors when choosing which keywords to target: Monthly traffic Competition Search intent Average ad spend Doing so ensures that you are maximizing the benefits that your target keywords can give you. This includes traffic, conversion, and sales. 2. Not knowing your audience One of the most important things you need to keep in mind with SEO is that you need to understand your target audience.  Remember that SEO is your audience’s voice.  Although many SEO marketers think that they know their audience, they often fall into the trap of not knowing how their customers behave. Here are some tips: Understand the market your customers wanted to buy. Can you identify the macro trends? Use both historical and real-time data to know how your customers’ behaviors are changing.  Plan out what you find on customer intent in your keyword selection and strategy.  Use Google planning tools and other essential tools that are at your disposal.  3. Incomplete business information Your website’s contact page should contain the name of your business, address, and phone number. Ideally, this should be listed as a text and not an image.  Doing so lets Google easily read your contact information, then verify it’s accuracy.  Note that Google will often compare the information listed on your site to the Google+ Local page’s available data.  That’s why you need to be consistent with the information you’ve listed and show that these are precisely the same information.  4. Lack of high-quality, relevant links Perhaps one of the best ways you can convince Google that your site is relevant is to have quality, inbound links to your webpages.  This will show Google that you’re more than deserving of showing up on local search results.  Similarly, you can also get other sites to link to you by publishing and promoting high-quality content.  An excellent starting point for your link building efforts is to include authority sources. This may consist of media outlets, local news, a niche that is relevant to regional trade, professional associations, and so on.  5. Irregular updates SEO is continuously changing.  Google is continually bringing in new updates, and if a website missed a significant update, it might cause them to lose valuable traffic.  Last year, Google released various updates such as Google BERT, 3rd June Core Update, and many more.  You always need to update your site and work with a reputable local SEO company if you want to get the best possible results.  6. Not claiming your Google My Business page One of the essential things you can do if you want to rank on local SEO, especially with Google, is to claim your Google My Business Page.  This is so important that it accounts for 14.7 percent of the local ranking signals.      With local SEO, Google displays the information Google you add on Google My Business. Doing so allows you to incorporate Google Maps, your business name and contact information, and operation hours in the search results. You can set your Google My Business Page directly on Google. However, you have to verify your listing. That way, no one couldn’t edit your page in the future.  Apart from your My Business page, you should also include proper or unique descriptions about your business. Ensure that your contact information and business category is correct, as this will be included in your listing.  Also, make sure that it’s consistent. That way, you can upload as many relevant photos as possible with your business.  7. Publishing low-quality content Your site’s content influences how you will rank on local search results.  Let’s say you have a thin website. Meaning you only have about 500 words per page, and the content you publish there is low-quality. Then, you’ll find it harder to rank on Google.  The most important thing to remember here is for you to review your key webpages, then ensure that you have about 500 words (or more) worth of relevant content.  8. Not active on social media platforms Being active on social media is one of the signals that Google uses when ranking local businesses.  So, invest in promoting your business on various social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Doing so creates a fantastic opportunity for you to gain more exposure and buzz around your business.  9. Not encouraging customer reviews Reviews can make or break your business. That’s because it signals trust or authority on your part to the browser. Thus, you’ll significantly enhance your rankings.  Also, 91% of people read online reviews first, and 84% will trust them as reputable recommendations. Meaning, earning positive reviews allows you to speed up significantly the growth of your business.  10. Not optimizing for mobile users Now, both mobile and voice search is vital, more than site owners realize. Therefore, it will be a massive mistake on your part to overlook both.  That’s why an excellent SEO strategy should ensure that you will optimize your site for both.  When done correctly, local SEO allows you to build brand awareness and boost credibility. Thus, earning the recognition of potential customers and clients.

If you feel like it will take most of your time, consider setting up a chatbot or hiring someone who can help manage your social media accounts. 7.
